Inside City on a Hill: The New Faith-Based Mental Health Center Changing North Idaho

Mental health has become one of the most important conversations happening in communities across the country—and North Idaho is no exception.

In this episode of the North Idaho Experience podcast, Dave and Seth sit down with the leadership team behind City on a Hil, a new faith-based behavioral health center located in Post Falls. The organization was created in response to rising suicide rates, a shortage of mental health providers, and a growing need for family-focused counseling services in the region.

What started as a conversation inside a local church has grown into a professional counseling center staffed with psychologists, psychiatrists, and licensed therapists who are working to support individuals, marriages, and families across the community.

If you want to better understand the mental health challenges facing Idaho—and the innovative ways local leaders are stepping in to help—this conversation offers an eye-opening look at what’s happening behind the scenes.

The Mental Health Crisis in Idaho

One of the most striking statistics discussed in the podcast is that Idaho consistently ranks among the highest states in the nation for suicide rates.

While there are many factors behind this, one major issue is access to care.

In fact, every county in Idaho is considered a mental health care desert, meaning there simply are not enough mental health professionals to meet the needs of the population.

This shortage can lead to long wait times for therapy appointments—sometimes six months to a year for someone trying to see a counselor.

For families dealing with crisis situations, trauma, or struggling teenagers, those wait times can be devastating.

The founders of City on a Hill saw that problem firsthand.

As leaders within the community and members of Real Life Ministries, they were frequently involved when tragedies occurred—from youth suicides to first responder crises. Eventually, the question became clear:

What role should the community and local churches play in helping address mental health?

That question ultimately led to the creation of City on a Hill.

From Documentary to Community Solution

The story of City on a Hill actually began with a documentary project.

Concerned about a rise in youth suicide, leaders partnered with the Lakeland School District to produce a documentary series exploring the issue and its impact on families and students.

The project, titled “Irreplaceable,” examined the pressures many young people face today—from social media comparison to broken family structures and identity struggles.

But while the documentary raised awareness, it also revealed something deeper: North Idaho needed more real-world solutions and resources.

Instead of stopping with awareness, the leadership team decided to take the next step—building a professional counseling center that could directly serve the community.

That vision eventually became City on a Hill.

What Makes City on a Hill Different

City on a Hill operates as a nonprofit behavioral health center that integrates professional counseling with faith-based principles.

The goal isn’t simply to offer religious guidance—it’s to combine evidence-based clinical therapy with a worldview rooted in faith and identity.

The clinic includes an impressive team for a startup organization, including:

  • Psychologists

  • Licensed clinical social workers

  • Licensed professional counselors

  • A psychiatrist with prescriptive authority

  • A neuropsychologist specializing in testing and diagnostics

This range of specialists allows the clinic to address a wide variety of needs—from trauma and PTSD to learning disorders, ADHD testing, marriage counseling, and family therapy.

One of the most unique aspects of City on a Hill is its commitment to making mental health care accessible.

The clinic accepts major insurance plans but also offers financial assistance and scholarships for individuals who cannot afford therapy.

In some cases, the organization has been able to provide testing and treatment at dramatically reduced costs for families in need.

Why Youth and Families Are a Major Focus

Although City on a Hill serves individuals of all ages, youth and families are a central priority.

Many of the mental health struggles seen in young people today are connected to broader cultural shifts.

Social media, for example, has dramatically changed the way teens view themselves and the world around them.

Unlike previous generations, today’s teenagers live in a constant environment of comparison. Every mistake, embarrassing moment, or social conflict can be captured online and shared indefinitely.

This can amplify feelings of shame, anxiety, and isolation.

Psychologists in the podcast explain that social media can also widen the gap between a person’s ideal self and perceived self—the version of themselves they think they should be compared to what they feel they actually are.

When that gap becomes too large, it can contribute to depression, hopelessness, and anxiety.

Add in broken family structures, economic pressure, and limited access to counseling, and it becomes clear why communities are struggling to keep up with mental health needs.

City on a Hill aims to address those challenges by strengthening the foundation of families and relationships.

Marriage and Family Stability Matter More Than People Realize

Interestingly, one of the most common issues the clinic is currently seeing isn’t youth counseling—it’s marriage counseling.

The reason is simple: the health of a marriage directly impacts the emotional stability of children and the overall well-being of the household.

When parents maintain a strong relationship, children benefit from the stability and emotional security it provides.

The team behind City on a Hill believes strengthening marriages can have a ripple effect across entire families and communities.

This approach reflects a broader philosophy that mental health doesn’t exist in isolation—it is deeply connected to relationships, identity, and purpose.

Helping Veterans and First Responders

Another major focus of the clinic is supporting veterans and first responders.

These groups often face unique mental health challenges, including trauma exposure, high stress, and difficult career transitions.

Many first responders and military veterans also struggle with the stigma surrounding mental health care.

Some hesitate to seek therapy because they worry it may impact their careers or make them appear weak to their peers.

City on a Hill hopes to change that perception by providing counselors who understand the realities of military and emergency service work.

The clinic also uses evidence-based treatments specifically designed for trauma and PTSD, helping individuals process experiences that can otherwise remain buried for years.

Creating a Scalable Model for the Future

One of the long-term goals for City on a Hill is to create a continuum of care model that can expand beyond a single clinic.

In addition to licensed therapists, the organization plans to train mental health coaches—community members who can walk alongside individuals for ongoing support after formal therapy ends.

This model would allow the organization to help far more people than traditional counseling alone.

Eventually, the hope is that other churches and communities could adopt a similar framework, expanding access to mental health care nationwide.

When Should Someone Seek Help?

One of the most important takeaways from the conversation is that people don’t need to wait until they reach a crisis point before seeking help.

Therapy can be beneficial anytime someone notices changes such as:

  • Increased isolation

  • Struggles in marriage or family relationships

  • Persistent sadness or numbness

  • Difficulty coping with stress

  • Feeling overwhelmed by life circumstances

For many people, simply talking to a trained professional can provide clarity and perspective before problems escalate.

And if someone is experiencing an immediate crisis, the national suicide hotline is available by dialing 988, which connects callers to trained counselors 24 hours a day.

A Community-Led Solution

One of the most encouraging aspects of City on a Hill is that it was created locally, by members of the community, in response to a need they saw firsthand.

Instead of waiting for outside solutions, leaders in North Idaho built a program designed specifically for their region.

The clinic officially opened in late 2024 and has already served dozens of families in its first months of operation.

As the organization continues to grow, its leaders hope to expand services, raise funding for scholarships, and train more professionals who can support people struggling with mental health challenges.
