Saving Veterans Lives | The Legacy of Nick Newby

The sacrifices of our military service members are immeasurable, and for many veterans, the battle doesn’t end when they return home. Transitioning to civilian life can bring challenges—financial hardship, PTSD, or simply finding a sense of purpose. But thanks to Newby-Ginnings, a veteran support organization in North Idaho, thousands of veterans and their families have found the help they need—free of charge.

At the heart of this mission is Nick Newby, a young soldier from Post Falls, Idaho, who gave his life in service to his country. His mother, Theresa Hart, turned grief into action by creating a community resource center that now serves over 6,700 veteran families.

This is Nick’s story, Theresa’s mission, and how you can help ensure no veteran is left behind.

Who Was Nick Newby? A Story of Sacrifice

Nick Newby was born and raised in Idaho, a proud American who enlisted in the Idaho National Guard in 2008, just one year after high school.

He trained hard, deployed to Iraq in 2010, and served as a gunner in a convoy security unit. He often reassured his mother that he was safe, confident in his team and his training.

But on July 7, 2011, just two months before his deployment was set to end, the unimaginable happened.

Nick’s convoy was struck by an explosively formed penetrator (EFP)—a lethal roadside bomb designed to pierce even the strongest armor.

Nick and his brother-in-arms, Nathan Beyers, were killed instantly. Another soldier, Jason, lost both of his legs.

Their loss was a devastating blow to their families, their fellow soldiers, and the entire North Idaho community.

But instead of letting grief consume her, Nick’s mother, Theresa Hart, made a decision: she would honor Nick’s legacy by serving those he fought beside.

Newby-Ginnings: A Lifeline for Veterans in North Idaho

In 2013, Newby-Ginnings was born. The name is a play on Nick’s last name, Newby, symbolizing a fresh start for veterans in need.

What started as a small project in Theresa’s garage quickly grew into something much larger.

Today, Newby-Ginnings is a 9,200 sq. ft. veteran resource center serving over 6,700 veteran families.

Unlike government programs filled with red tape and long wait times, Newby-Ginnings provides immediate, tangible support—with zero cost and zero barriers to those who have served.

What Newby-Ginnings Provides to Veterans

Food Pantry – A stocked pantry with fresh and non-perishable food items to ensure no veteran goes hungry.
Clothing + Shoes – Quality apparel for men, women, and children, all provided free of charge.
Furniture + Housewares – From beds to kitchen essentials, veterans can furnish their homes with dignity.
Mental Health + Support Services – A safe space for veterans to connect, share experiences, and receive guidance.
No Red Tape – Just Help – Enrollment is simple: show proof of service and start receiving the support you need.

Newby-Ginnings isn’t just a place to get essentials—it’s a community of support, connection, and respect for those who served.

The Growing Need: Why We Must Act Now

The need for veteran support in North Idaho is greater than ever.

  • On average, 200 veterans visit Newby-Ginnings every day.
  • More than 40% of those served come from Spokane, showing the demand extends beyond state lines.
  • Many veterans and families wait hours for services due to space constraints.

The Solution: A New Veteran Community Center

To meet this demand, Newby-Ginnings has an ambitious goal:

To build a new, 39,000 sq. ft. Veteran Community Center.

This facility will provide:
Expanded warehouse space to serve more families without long wait times.
Offices for veteran services—bringing resources like mental health support, VA representatives, and job placement programs under one roof.
Dedicated spaces for support groups, mentorship, and community building.

The goal: $8 million by the end of 2025.

This isn’t just a building—it’s a lifeline for thousands of veterans in need.
