Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept reserved for Silicon Valley. It is already changing how people write emails, build software, research complex topics, consume entertainment, run businesses, and even work through personal problems.
But where is all of this headed?
On North Idaho Experience, Eric and the team sat down with longtime software developer Luke Dupin for a wide-ranging conversation about artificial intelligence, privacy, open-source technology, jobs, law enforcement, warfare, human connection, and what individuals can do as AI becomes a bigger part of everyday life.
The conversation raised a central question: How can people benefit from AI without becoming completely dependent on it?
AI Could Change Almost Every Profession
One of the most fascinating parts of the discussion centered on how artificial intelligence could influence jobs that once seemed impossible to automate.
Law enforcement is one example.
Rather than replacing police officers, Luke suggested AI could potentially operate as an additional layer of awareness. A future system connected to body cameras or other sensors might be able to identify details an officer misses during a stressful encounter.
Humans naturally develop tunnel vision under pressure. AI systems could theoretically monitor a wider field of information, identify unusual behaviors, or help officers review encounters afterward.
That does not mean AI should make life-and-death decisions. In fact, the conversation repeatedly came back to the importance of human oversight.
The same issue applies to the legal system, accounting, medicine, programming, and countless other fields. AI can process enormous amounts of information quickly, but speed and access to data are not the same as human judgment.
What Happens to Jobs as AI Gets Better?
Some industries are already experiencing major changes.
Luke explained that software development is becoming increasingly AI-assisted. Tasks that once required a programmer to manually write large amounts of code can now be accelerated through AI tools.
Content creation is changing too.
Stock music, simple illustrations, basic writing, video production, and other forms of digital work are becoming easier to generate automatically.
Hollywood could eventually face similar disruption. AI-generated video is becoming increasingly realistic, potentially giving small independent creators access to production capabilities that once required enormous studios and budgets.
Interestingly, that could create an opportunity rather than simply eliminate jobs.
A small group of filmmakers may eventually be able to create something visually comparable to a major studio production. In that sense, AI could reduce barriers and allow more independent voices into entertainment.
Will Human-Made Become the New Premium?
As artificial content becomes increasingly common, the opposite trend may emerge: people may begin valuing human-made work more.
The podcast compared it to an organic label.
In the future, a “human-created” label could carry its own value. Consumers may specifically seek out writing, art, entertainment, businesses, and experiences that emphasize real human involvement.
That possibility reflects one of the biggest themes throughout the conversation: human connection could become more valuable as technology becomes more capable.
Technology makes communication easier, but easier does not always mean better.
Text messages replaced many phone calls. Social media replaced some face-to-face conversations. Short-form video can consume hours while requiring almost no sustained attention.
AI could continue that progression unless people consciously choose otherwise.
AI, Social Media and the Battle for Attention
The discussion also touched on the way recommendation algorithms shape behavior.
Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and other social networks are designed to continually serve content that keeps users engaged.
AI could make personalization significantly more powerful.
Instead of simply recommending the next video, future systems may generate content specifically for one person. Movies could potentially be edited automatically based on personal preferences. Characters, scenes, pacing, dialogue, and even entire storylines could be dynamically adjusted.
That level of personalization sounds convenient, but it also raises questions about attention, influence, and how much control people want algorithms to have over their media consumption.
The challenge may not be whether AI is “good” or “bad.” The bigger question is whether people are intentionally using the technology or simply allowing the technology to shape their habits.
Privacy May Become One of AI’s Biggest Issues
Privacy was another major theme.
When people use AI for personal conversations, journaling, business strategy, legal questions, financial analysis, or emotional support, they may share information far more sensitive than they would ever post publicly.
That makes understanding how a particular AI platform stores and uses information increasingly important.
Luke advocates for locally operated and open-source AI systems as one possible alternative.
Instead of sending every prompt to a massive cloud computing system, some open-source AI models can run directly on personal computers.
Tools such as Ollama make it possible to experiment with local language models, while privacy-oriented tools such as the Brave browser can help users reduce some forms of online tracking.
These systems are not necessarily as powerful or convenient as the largest cloud-based AI models, but local AI offers a compelling advantage: greater control over the technology and data.
The Technology Behind Modern AI
The conversation also explored how today’s AI systems evolved.
A major turning point came with the 2017 research paper Attention Is All You Need, which introduced the Transformer architecture that became foundational to modern large language models.
Since then, AI capabilities have accelerated dramatically.
But increased capability creates another challenge: society cannot afford to completely lose the human expertise underneath these systems.
Luke used cybersecurity as an example. Complex digital infrastructure depends on programmers and security researchers noticing unusual behavior that automated systems may overlook.
If future generations rely entirely on AI to write, analyze, troubleshoot, and think for them, fewer people may develop the expertise necessary to recognize when the technology itself is wrong.
What Can North Idaho Learn From the AI Revolution?
Despite discussing some unsettling possibilities, the conversation ultimately returned to something practical: focus on what you can control.
For North Idaho residents, that could mean learning how AI works instead of blindly adopting every new tool.
It could mean teaching children how to think critically, research independently, communicate face-to-face, and solve difficult problems without immediately outsourcing the work to technology.
It could mean businesses using AI for efficiency while continuing to prioritize relationships and personal service.
And it could mean communities experimenting with AI where it improves transparency and access to information without allowing algorithms to replace human judgment.
That balance may become increasingly important.
AI is going to continue evolving. The challenge is making sure people evolve alongside it without surrendering the skills, relationships, independence, and critical thinking that technology is supposed to enhance.
For communities like North Idaho, those human connections may ultimately become one of the greatest advantages in an increasingly automated world.
